I found a Buzzfeed article two days ago on books to fuel a creative mind.
One of the books (Bird by Bird, Annie Lamott) features the following quote:
“Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul. When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. It’s like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can’t stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship.”
The human condition includes a deep desire of belief in a meaning to our existence; whether through helping others, or providing them with the means to help themselves, the knowledge that the consequences of our individual experience have enhanced elements of this earth is one of the most fulfilling truths to connect with. More often than not, it can feel as if we float on the surface of a sphere which exists independently of us. So we continually seek connection and contribution to a community of like-minded people, no matter where in the world they may be. And we are aided in this pursuit by the geniuses who have used their gifts in the various mediums of art to transcend time, dissolve barriers, and not only show the way how, but hand us the license to extend beyond the limits of circumstance and fear. I believe we owe it to them, and to ourselves, to do this in every way we can learn how.
Expression breeds expansion.
